2016 Chevy Volt Colorado Springs CO
If you're at all serious about an electric vehicle, there's no logical excuse to exclude the 2016 Chevy Volt from your research. The Volt returns to the EV segment truly redesigned, yet maintains the innovative concept that led to its creation -- a long-range EV that also houses a gasoline engine in case you can't get to a charging unit when your batteries are depleted. On the outside, the Volt's dramatically grown-up body style no longer marks it as a hybrid, but instead resembles a modern and conventional subcompact sedan. The most impressive update to the Volt's specs sheet is an electric range that has increased from 35 miles to 53 all-electric miles.
A 25 percent increase in electric range is an impressive feat for a company with such a diverse consumer base as Chevrolet; there are Chevy enthusiasts out there who wouldn't dream of owning a hybrid. And while there are more hybrid options out there today than even a decade ago, those options aren't capable of providing the range that Volt promises while giving you a five-passenger vehicle with easy-to-use controls, a touchscreen interface for media plus Apple CarPlay and a starting MSRP well within the budget range of a small family looking for a new midsize sedan.
2016 Green Car of the Year
It's not just good looking -- The 2016 Chevy Volt nabbed Green Car Journal's "2016 Green Car of the Year" award for its unprecedented all-electric range of 53 miles and for its complete, efficient powertrain system, which offers a range of up to 420 miles on a full charge and full tank of gas.
In addition to two electric motors good for 149 horsepower, the Volt houses a 1.5-liter direct injection gas engine/generator. When the battery that powers the electric engine is depleted, the gas engine kicks in to both power the Volt and recharge the battery as a generator and through regenerative braking.
The Volt's battery pack recharges to full in 4.5 hours when plugged into a 240-volt outlet and takes about 13 hours when plugged-in to a standard 120-volt outlet. The Volt should provide the equivalent of 102 MPG in combined gas and electric operation in normal driving conditions (longer trips alter performance).
